What moved the numbers, and why
A post is written only when a weekly reading or a ruling changes something a reader would want explained: a range moved, an explanation's standing changed, a famous claim settled, the headline moving. Each post says what happened, where the record is, what it changes on this site, and what it does not mean.
Start here: is anyone out there, and how this site keeps count
Is anyone out there? Enrico Fermi asked in 1950, and the sky has stayed silent. This is how the site keeps count of what we know about that silence, where the count stood on 17 October 2026, and what could change it.
- an estimate revised
Our galaxy may make more new stars than I allowed for, and it barely changes the answer
On 17 October 2026 I raised my highest allowance for how many new stars our galaxy makes each year from 10 to 20, after a 2023 measurement came in above the old limit. The chance that we are alone in the galaxy moved from 58.8 to 58.0 percent, and why it moved so little says where the real uncertainty lies.
Every publication read, including the ones that moved nothing, is in the story so far, day by day. The weekly readings themselves are on this week's reading.
